Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic named three reasons why Serbia refuses to join Western sanctions against Russia. He stated this on national television, RIA Novosti reports.
According to him, even if we leave aside the emotional and moral part of this issue, which is important in politics, especially in relations between states, Serbia's decision is correct. Vucic recalled that Russia was on the side of Serbia when they wanted to declare it a genocidal people in 2015, and vetoed the relevant resolution in the UN Security Council. He noted that Moscow has always supported the Serbian authorities on the issue of Kosovo and Metohija, and without a Russian veto in the UN Security Council, it will be difficult for Serbia to defend its constitution and territorial integrity.
In addition, the President wondered what Belgrade would say to those who over the past 20 years have not imposed sanctions against Serbia and have not harmed it, that they are going to introduce some restrictive measures against them. He also thought about how and at what price Serbia will receive gas if it imposes sanctions on Russia.
Earlier, Vucic called the possible rejection of oil and gas from Russia a "shot in the foot" for Europe. According to Vucic, alternative gas sources do not have enough fuel for Europe's needs. He also noted that "rational people in the West" understand this and realize the need for negotiations with Russia.
