Tedros Adanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), assessed the possibilities of humanity to defeat the coronavirus pandemic. This is reported by TASS.
"The pandemic will end when the world decides to end it. It is in our hands," said the head of the WHO. According to him, the world has "all the necessary tools" to defeat the pandemic, including in the field of public health and medicine. "However, the world has not used these tools well," Gebreyesus noted.
He recalled the previously announced WHO goal: to vaccinate at least 40 percent of the population of each country against COVID-19 by the end of 2021. Gebreyesus stressed that it can be achieved only if "the statements of the countries and companies controlling the supply of [vaccines] correspond to their actions." He called on countries that have already achieved 40 percent vaccination coverage, including all G20 countries, to supply drugs to the international COVAX mechanism and the African Vaccine Acquisition Task Force (AVAT) as a priority.
In addition, the head of WHO called on pharmaceutical companies to "share know-how, technologies and licenses," including suspending intellectual property rights for vaccines. According to the WHO Director General, this will "put an end to the pandemic and accelerate global recovery."
Earlier, Gebreyesus estimated the right number of drugs to vaccinate 70 percent of the world's population. He stressed that the disproportion in the distribution of coronavirus vaccines caused a "global catastrophe", but there is still an opportunity to correct the situation. In order to implement vaccination plans for 2021 and 2022, Gebreyesus called for "taking beyond" the current level of political action and cooperation.
