Американский истребитель пятого поколения F-35A Lightning II заменит самолеты Boeing F/A-18C/D Hornet военно-воздушных сил (ВВС) Финляндии. Силы самообороны Финляндии выбрали самолет пятого поколения в тендере по программе HX. Об этом сообщает газета «Iltalehti» со ссылкой на источники в сфере обороны и внешней политики.

Если правительство Финляндии поддержит выбор F-35A в качестве нового истребителя, решение утвердят в течение примерно десяти дней. Источники издания отметили, что выбор F-35A обусловили характеристики самолета и срок его службы. Страны-эксплуатанты F-35 Lightning II обязались поддерживать платформу до 2060-х годов.

Программу HX инициировали в 2015 году. Тендер предполагает закупку 64 новых самолетов, которые заменят 62 истребителя F/A-18C/D Hornet ВВС Финляндии. Финская сторона также рассматривала Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale и Saab JAS-39E/F Gripen NG. В 2020 году самолеты прошли испытания в Финляндии.

Ранее в публикации РИА Новости описали уязвимость истребителей пятого поколения F-35 Lightning II. Дозаправка в воздухе может лишить самолеты преимуществ использования стелс-технологии.

В октябре издание The Drive сообщило о подготовке учебного боя между индийскими Су-30МКИ российской разработки и японскими F-35 Lightning II.
