In Sudan, the military opened fire on demonstrators protesting against the coup in the country. On Monday, October 25, Al Arabiya reports.
According to the TV channel, the protesters tried to approach the headquarters of the Sudanese army in the capital Khartoum. To stop the protesters, the military opened fire on them. As a result, at least 12 people received gunshot wounds. No other details are given.
Earlier it was reported that tens of thousands of local residents took to the streets of Khartoum amid an attempted coup by the military.
Prior to that, it became known that armed men surrounded the house of Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamduk. Four ministers were also detained — communications, Information, Finance and Industry, Khartoum Governor Ayman Nimr and representative of the Sovereign Council Mohammed al-Faqi. In addition, it was noted that Khartoum was completely blocked by the military, the entrances to the city were blocked, and the Internet was turned off in some areas.
In response to such actions of the military, the civilian forces of the country called on the population to come out for a peaceful protest against the next coup.
In 2019, a military coup also took place in Sudan, during which President Omar al-Bashir was overthrown. Two branches of government have been formed in the country: the military, represented by the head of the Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the civil, represented by Prime Minister Abdullah Hamduk. Both sides agreed that a transitional period will be in effect in the country until November 2021.
