Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called Europe an open prison for 35 million Muslims. This is reported by Hurriyet Daily News.
The Turkish leader condemned the rise of Islamophobia and the implementation of discriminatory policies in the European Union, in particular, in France. He said that Islamophobia is no less dangerous than the coronavirus, and is spreading just as quickly in European countries.
"There is no difference between the atmosphere of hatred against Jews before the Second World War and the atmosphere that is being created against Muslims today," Erdogan said. He noted that followers of Islam are increasingly "labeled as outsiders," especially women in hijabs.
The politician stressed that European leaders do not fight Islamophobia and use it for their own purposes. According to him, the situation has reached a critical level, and all Muslims in Europe face serious threats to their security.
Erdogan also criticized the law on combating extremism, which may be adopted in France. He said the law violates human rights, restricts religious freedom and undermines democratic values. "We expect the French government to repeal this bill as soon as possible," the president added.
In April, the French Interior Ministry presented a draft of new anti-terrorism legislation, which drew criticism from human rights activists, as some of its provisions violate the privacy law. The proposals put forward as part of the initiative will allow the authorities to systematically monitor people's online behavior and store their data for longer.
