5Dimes ‘Withdrawal’ From US For Sports Betting Had Some Hiccups.
Offshore sportsbook 5Dimes announced this week it was closing its doors to US customers. But there were some hiccups with that move.
Multiple 5Dimes customers have since had their open futures bets and accounts transferred a more obscure offshore site called Betanysports .
The site layout, prices and bet options all look identical to 5Dimes. Review sites note betanysports is also based in Costa Rica and a “sister site” to 5Dimes.
As one Reddit user reported: “ 5D transferred my entire account over, and it went flawlessly. All account info, all pending bets, balance, etc…all transferred and looks exactly like 5d did.”
The simplicity of the migration suggests that 5Dimes and betanysports might run on the same platform. Migrations simply aren’t that easy otherwise.
Using the same platform doesn’t necessarily mean the companies are connected, but it does raise some questions.
Multiple Reddit and social media users also reported a straightforward switch and that betanysports was identical to 5Dimes.
What is going on behind the scenes at 5Dimes?
The company and customer service agents said there was no relationship between the two sites.
It’s also important to note not all customers were offered the chance to switch. Some bettors with massive +EV futures simply had them voided. Legal Sports Report also asked 5Dimes customer support for options for betting with the site closing off the US. No suggestion or offer to move was given. (The account also had no deposit history, for what it’s worth.)
There’s obviously a huge imbalance here in favor of the book. They’ve already collected on a lot of losing NHL and NBA futures. And now they can cancel the remaining live tickets.
Bettors were also told that the minimum withdrawal amount on account balances was $100, causing more issues for smaller players.
How did we get here?
Remember, 5Dimes is closing US customers because it wants to relauch its operations with a “fresh start”. The company hinted it could be looking at the regulated market.
However, it declined to provide any details on how such a relaunch would work. One option laid out by Eilers & Krejcik analyst Chris Krafcik could be the PokerStars route.
That is, some kind of settlement with the Department of Justice , then a sale of assets, like the brand and tech stack, to a third party.
That’s assuming the 5Dimes brand and tech has any value left, that is. Perhaps the most valuable asset is the database of US customers built over two decades.
Regardless of what’s really going on behind the scenes, the push for a 5Dimes rehabilitation and “fresh start,” hasn’t exactly started out promisingly.


5Dimes Admits Illegal US Sports Betting Operation In $46 Million Settlement With Feds.
5Dimes and the U.S. Department of Justice reached a $46.8 million settlement of an investigation into illegal US sports betting operations, as well as money laundering and wire fraud .
The company announced an intent to enter the US sports betting market following the deal, although state regulators likely will balk at the long list of criminal activity detailed in the settlement.
5D Holdings and owner Laura Varela will forfeit the illegally obtained gambling proceeds as part of a settlement with the US Attorney’s Office Eastern District of Pennsylvania into the criminal investigation of 5Dimes’ offshore operations in Costa Rica .
“Beginning in at least 2011, 5Dimes accepted wagers from and made payouts to U.S. bettors, and transferred more than $46.8 million in proceeds earned from its illegal gambling activities in such a manner as to attempt to hide the nature, location, source, and control of the funds.”
5Dimes already incorporated 5D Americas LLC in Delaware. The agreement allows Varela the “use of her assets or the assets of the 5Dimes brand to explore future options, including, but not limited to, re-constituting the 5Dimes brand to be licensed to conduct legal, regulated gaming activities in the U.S. and internationally.”
Why is 5Dimes settling?
Varela is the widow of Sean “Tony” Creighton , who was found dead in Costa Rica after he was kidnapped and murdered in Sept. 2018 . She’s a Costa Rican citizen.
The $46.8 million was traceable to transactions that violated multiple sections of Title 18 of the United States Code . The settlement agreement includes the fact that 5Dimes “acknowledged that those funds are the proceeds of various unlawful gambling-related offenses.”

That $46.8 million seized wasn’t totally liquid as Creighton attempted to launder the funds multiple ways, according to the settlement.
The Department of Homeland Security Investigations seized $3.4 million in cash and other assets like a 1948 George Mikan rookie card he bought for more than $400,000 and $715,000 in rare coins.
In total, the assets forfeited were worth more than $26 million . Varela also agreed to forfeit $ 2 million seized by Costa Rican authorities and pay an additional $15 million .
Offshore betting seen as illegal by feds.
The settlement and preceding investigation strike a blow to those sympathetic to the legality of the offshore industry within the United States . The federal government began investigating 5Dimes’ illegal acceptance of US-based bets years ago and imposed a massive fine for the company to avoid charges.
While the company paints the settlement as its pass to seek state-level licensure, the underlying agreement submarines the opinion of many who paint offshore operations as legal under US law.
The admission of ongoing violations of US law dating back at least a decade will make for a heavy discussion topic for state regulators.
What’s next for 5Dimes?
The next step will be trying to get 5Dimes licensed in New Jersey , Varela’s attorney Jeff Ifrah told the Wall Street Journal .
Varela will also have the support of the US Attorney’s Office throughout the process. It will “answer inquiries made by gaming regulators, potential investors, and/or financial institutions regarding her cooperation in EDPA’s investigation and lack of involvement in the operations of 5Dimes,” according to the settlement agreement.
That means whether Varela gives it a go with the brand or decides to sell, she’ll get the help of the authorities she aided throughout the investigation.
How gambling regulators will treat 5Dimes will be an interesting case study. Literally days ago it was still taking wagers from Americans illegally. And we know that the site has been sending at least some bettors to a site that runs with the same backend and lines.


What’s Next For 5Dimes Sportsbook After Shuttering To US Clients?
Offshore book promised clarity for customers on Sept. 30.
Early this month, offshore sportsbook 5Dimes announced that it was closing to U.S. customers and would update on next steps by Sept. 30. The announcement caused plenty of speculation, lots of frustration and confusion among customers, and left open the question of “what now?”
With Sept. 30 upon us, there has been no word from 5Dimes — to its customers or the media — about what to expect. The company parted ways with its media relations firm shortly after an industry expert prematurely tweeted about the shutdown, and its new crisis management firm, Levick, wasn’t sharing ahead of tomorrow’s deadline.
To catch us all up to date, just after Labor Day weekend, the San Jose, Costa Rica-based sportsbook announced that it would suspend service to U.S.-based patrons on Sept. 21, and it strongly suggested that is was going to find a pathway to operate in legal U.S. jurisdictions. The company wrote that patrons had until Sept. 25 to request payouts.
“5Dimes is excited to announce that it is embarking on a new business venture,” the notice to customers read. “With the evolving legal landscape in the United States, we want to take advantage of the opportunity to offer an improved sports betting experience to our many U.S. customers.”
The announcement resulted in swift — and often negative — reaction from customers, many of whom were caught off guard and concerned about outstanding wagers and their balances.
Waiting for payouts and future plans.
Some 5Dimes patrons took to Twitter to share frustrations over long wait times to get paid out. Withdrawal methods (some use Bitcoin) and experiences varied. A head’s-up thread on Reddit titled “Today is the last day to request 5Dimes payouts” also served as a forum for discussion about the sportsbook closing shop to the U.S., at least for now. Some had better experiences and provided advice for others situated similarly.

Since the early September announcement, the only “official” word from 5Dimes came via a statement from Laura Varela, the widow of 5Dimes founder Sean “Tony” Creighton, who was kidnapped and killed in Costa Rica in 2018. Creighton’s relatives reportedly paid $1 million in ransom, though the kidnappers demanded $5 million. His body was found a year later.
“But there are definitely some positive surprises in store for you,” Varela wrote. “I am working with experts and consultants to make sure that the brand that you have come to love is well represented in the regulated US market.”
