п»їCollege football expert picks, bowl predictions for Jan. 2, 2021: Under 58 in Oregon vs. Iowa State.
Barrett Sallee has locked in his top three college football picks for bowl action on Saturday.
No. 5 Texas A&M thought it should have made the College Football Playoff field, but the Aggies ultimately had to settle for an appearance in the 2021 Orange Bowl on Jan. 2. William Hill Sportsbook lists the Aggies as 7.5-point favorites against No. 13 North Carolina in the college football bowl odds for this 8 p.m. ET kickoff on Saturday. Will the Aggies, who are 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games, be motivated by their perceived snub, or will this be a letdown spot?
Elsewhere on the Saturday bowl schedule, William Hill lists No. 10 Iowa State at -4.5 against No. 25 Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl, Kentucky at -2.5 against NC State in the Gator Bowl and Indiana at -9.5 against Ole Miss in the Outback Bowl. Where are the best values for college football bowl bets on Saturday? Before finalizing anything for Saturday's bowl action, be sure to see the top college football bowl expert picks, predictions and best bets from Barrett Sallee.

Top college football expert predictions for Jan. 2.
One of Sallee's top college football picks for Jan. 2: He is backing the under 58 in the 2021 Fiesta Bowl matchup between No. 25 Oregon and No. 10 Iowa State at 4 p.m. ET.
Oregon's offense opened the season hot, but averaged just 24 points per game in its last two outings. Iowa State, meanwhile, likes to run the ball with Breece Hall and also has a strong defense. Sallee expects this game to have a heavy emphasis on the run, helping the under hit with some room to spare.
"The under is 6-4-1 in Iowa State games and Oregon's offense is hard to trust," Sallee told SportsLine. "Expect a heavy dose of old-school football by the Cyclones and Oregon to protect Tyler Shough and not get too creative with the play-calling. This won't be a typical Pac-12 vs. Big 12 matchup."

CBS Sports: Boston College could make noise in 2021.
(Photo: Winslow Townson, USA TODAY Sports)
Hopes surrounding Jeff Hafley's second season as Boston College's head coach are high after an encouraging 6-5 2020 season, and it appears that one major media outlet is drinking the kool-aid.
CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd listed Boston College as one of 10 teams that could crack the AP Top 25 and make some noise in 2021. Here is what he had to say about the Eagles' prospects of taking the next step under Hafley in 2021:
" Jeff Hafley won six games in his rookie season as coach. Phil Jurkovec will be one of the top ACC quarterbacks. He'll have Zay Flowers (892 yards receiving, nine touchdowns) as a main target. The defense went from the ACC basement to the middle of the pack cutting off more than 60 yards per game. Hafley has already hit the transfer portal for Florida State defensive back Jaiden Lars-Woodbey , a one-time freshman All-American, and Temple linebacker Isaiah Graham-Mobley ."
Dodd's optimism is understandable considering what Boston College returns and the talent it welcomes to the Heights in 2021. Jurkovec and Flowers are back to lead a rejuvenated offense, as are David Bailey, Pat Garwo, Travis Levy , Jehlani Galloway , Jaelen Gill , CJ Lewis and the entire starting offensive line from 2020. Boston College also gets Kobay White and Ethon Williams back at wide receiver next season. Defensively, Boston College will have to make up for the departures of Isaiah McDuffie and Max Richardson at linebacker, but Lars-Woodbey, Graham-Mobley and company should be up for the task. Four-star 2021 signee Bryce Steele will also have a chance to crack the Eagles' inside linebacker two-deep, as will some of his classmates at their respective positions. Either way, Boston College's defense was much-improved under Hafley and defensive coordinator Tem Lukabu last season, and it is safe to assume the unit will only continue to improve under their watch.
If Hafley's first season leading Boston College is any sort of indication of things to come, the Eagles are in a good position to take flight in 2021. Expect plenty more praise surrounding Hafley's program in the coming months before Boston College kicks off its season.
National Signing Day 2021: Four-star linebacker Trevin Wallace picks Kentucky over Auburn.
Kentucky's signing class got a big-time addition on Wednesday.
Kentucky's 2021 recruiting class got a late exclamation point on National Signing Day when the Wildcats signed four-star linebacker Trevin Wallace. The Georgia native is considered the No. 35 overall player in the 2021 class by 247Sports and No. 140 in the 247Sports Composite. He is the second four-star signee for Kentucky in the class and the first on the defensive side of the ball.
Wallace previously committed to Boston College over the summer before his recruitment picked up during his senior season at Wayne Count High School in Jesup, Georgia. Based off his 247Sports ranking, Wallace is Kentucky's third-highest rated commitment of the recruiting rankings era. The versatile 6-foot-2 athlete, who also played on offense and ran track, considered Auburn as well and had offers from Florida, Oklahoma and LSU, among others.
He was considered one of the top-10 uncommitted players in the 2021 class entering National Signing Day and has been projected as a potential early-round NFL draft pick by 247Sports recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks, who wrote the following scouting report on Wallace:
Owns the requisite build for a traditional off-ball linebacker. Highly varied positional experience with big-play ability across the board. Dynamic do-it-all high school football player. Snaps at receiver, running back, QB, and multiple linebacker spots, plus reps as a kick and punt returner. Often aligned as an OLB, including standing on the edge, and has even lined up over the slot in some passing downs. Flashes terrific burst and acceleration that translate to his numerous roles at the high school level. Physical player who does not shy from contact whether defending or with the ball. Motor runs hot. Great top-end speed, especially for a linebacker projection. Hits the long ball on offense and is not tracked down in the open field. Dangerous one-cut runner with enough close-quarters wiggle to redirect pretty naturally. Speed verified in track setting with strong 11.08 100. Impressive overall track and field profile that includes the 100, 200, 110 hurdles, high jump, long jump, and shot put. Natural striker as a tackler. Closes fast and arrives with purpose. Fully capable of the big hit. Could need some time to adjust to playing one spot full-time. Potential to fit multiple defensive schemes as a natural run-and-hit linebacker with athleticism to develop consistent coverage ability. Possesses outstanding overall profile for an off-ball linebacker projection given high school versatility and proven playmaking ability. High-major prospect with long-term early-round NFL Draft ceiling.

Top 2020-21 college football bowl predictions.
That's a classic letdown spot for big-time programs and the Tar Heels, despite missing some players who opted out to prepare for the NFL Draft, should be extremely motivated to close with a big win in just their second season under Mack Brown. North Carolina averaged a whopping 556.6 yards of total offense per game this season, which ranked fourth in the country.
The Tar Heels, who averaged 43.0 points per game, are led by quarterback Sam Howell. The sophomore signal caller averaged 10.6 yards per pass attempt this season and the Aggies gave up 747 passing yards and eight passing touchdowns against the two most prolific passing offenses they faced (Alabama and Florida). The model predicts that Howell will throw for well over 275 yards and two touchdowns on average to help the Tar Heels cover in well over 50 percent of simulations.
Another one of the top college football predictions from the model: No. 11 Indiana (-8.5) covers the spread when it takes on the Ole Miss Rebels in the Outback Bowl at 12:30 p.m. .ET. Saturday's matchup will feature one of the nation's most prolific offenses facing off against an extremely stingy defense.
The Rebels average 562.4 yards per game on offense this season, which ranks third in the country. However, Ole Miss will be without two of its most explosive playmakers on Saturday. Wide receiver Elijah Moore, who ranks second in the nation with 1,193 receiving yards, and tight end Kenny Yeboah, who averages 19.4 yards per reception, both opted out to focus on the 2021 NFL Draft.
Indiana, meanwhile, is giving up just 19.4 points per game this season. The Hoosiers have given up 11 or fewer points in three of their last four games, and SportsLine's model predicts Indiana will hold the Rebels to just 26 points on Saturday, well under their season total average (40.6). The model shows Indiana covering the spread in well over 60 percent of simulations, while the over (65.5) hits more than 50 percent of the time.
