French President Emmanuel Macron at a press conference following the EU summit on Friday, March 25, commented on Russia's demand to pay for gas in rubles. This is reported by RIA Novosti.

Macron said that France has no reason to agree to pay in rubles. "The purpose of this requirement is to find a mechanism to circumvent sanctions. But this is incompatible with the contracts that we signed," he explained. The head of France stressed that European buyers of Russian gas should buy it for euros.

On March 23, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Europe should pay for gas in Russian rubles. In this regard, he instructed the Central Bank and the government to determine in a week the procedure for the purchase of rubles on the domestic market by buyers of Russian gas. At the same time, the Russian leader stressed that Moscow will continue to supply in accordance with the terms of the contracts. Only the currency will change.
