Austrian President Alexander van der Bellen has sworn in the new Chancellor of the republic, former Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg. This is reported by der Tagesspiegel.
The politician represents the Austrian People's Party (ANP). Van der Bellen also dismissed Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, who announced his resignation on October 9, in connection with an investigation on suspicion of complicity in bribery and abuse of trust.
The post of Foreign Minister will be taken by Michael Linhart. He has been the Austrian Ambassador to France since 2018, and has also been the Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry for a long time.
Schallenberg's candidacy for the post of chancellor was proposed by Kurz. It is reported that both politicians have worked together for many years. 52-year-old Schallenberg was born on June 20, 1969 in Bern (Switzerland) in the family of an Austrian diplomat (ambassador) of noble origin. Lawyer by education, studied at the universities of Vienna and Paris. Since 1997, he has been working in the Austrian Foreign Ministry system.
On October 6, the Austrian Prosecutor's Office for the Investigation of Economic and Corruption Crimes confirmed that an investigation was underway against Sebastian Kurz and nine other persons in the corruption case. The ex-Chancellor commented that all investigations against him are conducted without the presence of concrete evidence, recalled the presumption of innocence and stressed that the decision on guilt is not made by the public, but by the court.
