п»їFIFA 20: EA Sports release a major patch to fix the games 'unplayable' Career Mode.
FIFA 20 didn't get a great reception upon release last month.
The hashtag 'FixCareerMode' was trending worldwide on Twitter from day one, with fans voicing their frustrations about one of the most popular game modes.
It seems they had a lot to be angry about, with multiple bugs reported by a thread of players.
Many of the issues surround AI team selections, with top clubs appearing to select reserves and youth players throughout the season.
That led to some gamers seeing the top six teams in the bottom half of the table, or even in the relegation zone, as they simulated their seasons.
Inexplicably, one fan even posted a screenshot of the Premier League table in his Career Mode and Liverpool were top with 149 points having played 74 games.
Some of the problems were inexcusable and EA Sports were quick to release a statement.
"Let me say that the team is aware and prioritising fixes for this area and have been successful in identifying some of the issues," FIFA 20's Corey Andress said at the time, per Goal.
Fans will be glad to know that EA have been good to their word and on Tuesday, released a patch that addresses and fixes all the following Career Mode bugs:
That's a lot of fixes. But it's something that wouldn't have needed to be done if FIFA 20 wasn't so broken upon release.

FIFA 20 News: EA promises to fix career mode bugs ruining the game.
EA has promised to fix the bugs which have plagued the career mode in their new iteration of FIFA. The developers have published a Q&A section that accepts the problems and promises to fix them.
FIFA 20 is the ultimate game for football fans and comes with a lot of expectations. FIFA 19 was not a great release by EA and the fans were expecting a proper follow-up from FIFA 20. However, it looks like EA messed up the career mode big time. The career mode is unplayable according to many users and there is an uproar on Twitter with the #FixCareerMode hashtag trending.
According to the stated problems, AI-controlled top teams are ranking badly (teams who usually perform exceptionally in leagues are getting relegated), teams are starting with poor line-ups in important matches, the number of matches per week is abnormally high after rescheduling, dynamic potential changes for players which is unrealistic, position changes after editing the squad, easy gameplay in even Ultimate Difficulty and absurd questions in press conferences.
The other league structures like UEFA Europa League are malfunctioning. The league's break after teams win the Europa League and get promoted to the UEFA Champions League.
EA has posted solutions to a few problems but the majority of problems will be fixed after a distant patch update. The company has not posted any date for a possible patch update to fix all the problems. They are currently investigating and taking feedback from the users.
FIFA 20 was not expected to have such a rocky start but the team of developers is working hard to combat the situation. It is hard to determine whether these stumbles will affect the reputation of the game in the long run but EA has to get things in order if they want to stay on top of the football simulator competition.
EA Sports opens up about FIFA 20 issues and outlines upcoming fixes following player outcry.
Career Mode, FUT, gameplay and more.
EA Sports has responded to the current player outcry over FIFA 20 by detailing what's next for the game and, to an extent, what went wrong.
The developer went into a surprising amount of detail on its decision-making and the potential for change in a FAQ published a day after the #FixCareerMode hashtag trended on Twitter.
EA Sports outlined its top priorities for improvements to Career Mode, including a fix to AI teams fielding low OVR-rated lineups, top teams appearing low in the table or even being relegated, and improvements to the Career Mode scheduling algorithms to avoid match congestion.
On that last point, EA Sports explained what went wrong:
"From the feedback we had received in FIFA 19, we made addressing these concerns a priority in FIFA 20, and implemented logic improvements to this system early in the development cycle, where the results we were seeing were positive.
"Unfortunately, a change that we made late in the development cycle, which was the insertion of the authentic fixture schedule for the first season of a Career Mode, resulted in an issue where the rescheduling of games is creating new match congestion issues. Our team is investigating a fix for this new issue, and also performing another sweep of the system to see if there are any further improvements we can make to improve the algorithms."
EA Sports also addressed problems around Career Mode press conferences, where you're asked questions about things that aren't relevant to the save, such as getting asked about relegation when you're in the top four.
EA Sports help its hands up on this one, saying players have found issues "we were unable to find during the development cycle". This will be addressed in a future title update.
EA Sports went further in its post than Career Mode, however. Regarding Ultimate Team, it addressed complaints about the Squad Building user interface (the perception is it takes too long to complete SBCs when compared to previous FUTs). On this, changes are coming in a future title update.
EA Sports also help its hands up on the issue of not being able to view the requirements for each rank in Division Rivals or each tier in Squad Battles.
"This was an unfortunate miss on our part when the screens in this area were redesigned for FIFA 20, so it wasn't on our radar until the feedback started coming from the community during Early Access," EA said. Again, the developers are working on a fix.
Interestingly, EA Sports addressed feedback on gameplay. In FIFA 20, headers are pretty much useless. It's nigh-on impossible to score from a header, and crosses feel significantly nerfed following last year's game, both from open play and set pieces.
This is not a bug, EA Sports said. It's by design - and it's not changing.
"Based on feedback from FIFA 19, both from players directly and based on our own data, the decision was made to make crossing and corners less effective in FIFA 20, resulting in less goals from headers," EA Sports said.
"A big part of this decision is an effort to promote skill differentiation and the idea that most of the goals that are scored are the direct result of player actions.
"While we are always looking at ways to improve the game, at the moment we don't have any plans to change this in FIFA 20."
EA also explained why defensive clearances are much weaker in FIFA 20 than FIFA 19. In short - don't use the pass button to clear.
"In FIFA 19, using the pass button to clear the ball via a header was often an effective way of executing a clearance," EA Sports said.
"In FIFA 20, due to the changes to headers, as covered in the previous question, players who are using the pass button may be seeing those clearances be less effective than in previous years. Players should ensure that they are using the clearance button when they are trying to clear the ball from their area when on defense."
What will change, though, are goalkeepers, who have been found to punch the ball in situations where they could catch it, and too often they will rebound shots into the path of an attacker for a tap-in.
"There are a number of updates and fixes that we have been working on that we are targeting for release in a future Title Update, with a specific focus on the areas mentioned," EA Sports said.
So, when's this title update coming out? The update with the gameplay changes will be released in the next week or two. But we don't know when, exactly, the fixes for Career Mode and FUT will come online. In a tweet thread issued yesterday, FIFA community chief Corey Andress explained that updates to Career Mode take longer than FUT server-side fixes because Career Mode is client-based and as such needs to go through the proper patching process.
And finally, Volta, FIFA 20's disappointing FIFA Street-style mode. It currently doesn't have any microtransactions. Will it get any?
"We've built the game so that, in the future, we could add in-game purchases if we felt they would add to the experience for players," EA Sports said. Hmm.
All in all, EA's FAQ is welcome, and unusually open for a developer that has traditionally kept its cards close to its chest. Will it pour cold water on the complaints, specifically those revolving around Career Mode? Without a timeline for fixes, it's unlikely. But this is a start.

Minor bug fixes and additional responsiveness are the focus of FIFA 20 update 1.22.
The Premier League is back underway – and with it comes FIFA 20 update 1.22, AKA Title Update 18. However, there's nothing specific to the English big boys' return in the latest FIFA 20 patch. Instead it's all about fine-tuning, which is hardly a surprise with FIFA 21 around the corner. Read on to find out exactly what FIFA 20 update 1.22 changes, and some of the other tweaks made in recent patches.
FIFA 20 update 1.22: bug fixes.
FIFA 20 update 1.22 is a relative tiddler in terms of wholesale changes – so much so that the patch notes issued by EA are uncharacteristically vague. The most intriguing info is that the patch "contains upgrades to the tools that game devs use to further drive gameplay responsiveness investigations". Whether that makes the action itself more responsive is down to user interpretation – I play Ultimate Team daily and have noticed little change.
Also included in this patch according to EA are fixes for "FIFA crashing bugs" and freezing issues, some "performance and stability improvements", and "other minor fixes".
FIFA 20 update 1.22: fan feedback.
"Early impressions… an improvement!" writes Erik The Blue on the official FIFA forums in response. "BUT nowhere near where I'd expect a AAA game that's had 21,000 patches to be. Passing's better, in that it doesn't just trickle off my boot and it goes further than 2 inches. And I don't feel quite as harassed by pitbulls of the AI defence so it definitely feels slightly better than the low it had hit in the last month. No longer feels like there's a force field or that players are deliberately avoiding the ball. Still feels very slow, not as in connection just the game speed."
Retro_G is much more dismissive: "Trash update, feels even less unresponsive, just played against a high ping Portuguese opponent, my players felt a good two seconds behind the play. Maybe if you're playing on dial-up internet, you'll enjoy this patch."
FIFA 20 update 1.17: the last big patch.
While patches have been regular throughout the life of FIFA 20, there hasn't been a significant one since March's Title Update 13, AKA patch 1.17. Here's the official EA word on what changed with that one:

Added a numerical ping indicator measured in milliseconds to online match lobbies in modes that use data centers. The ping bars remain on the lobby screen and represent the following values: 5 bars indicate 30 milliseconds or less. 4 bars indicate 31 - 76 milliseconds. 3 bars indicate 77 - 100 milliseconds. 2 bars indicate 101 - 150 milliseconds. 1 bar indicates 150 milliseconds or more. Added a Traits tab to the Player Details pop up, detailing all of the Traits that the selected Player Item has. Level 30 Seasonal Objective Player Item rewards were incorrectly displaying an out of contracts icon, this was a visual issue only.
FIFA 20 update 1.16: new player faces.
The early March update was a decent one too – FIFA 20 player faces just keep on coming. According to the ever-reliable FIFA 20 Starheads thread, where the community tracks such updates throughout the season, these were the 17 new inclusions - 18 if you include West Ham manager David Moyes:
