US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken believes that a direct conversation between US and Russian Presidents Joseph Biden and Vladimir Putin will benefit both countries. He said this in an interview with the Financial Times.
The American side does not want an escalation in relations with Russia, the Secretary of State assured. On the contrary, the United States is interested in restoring stability, but the result will largely depend on Moscow's actions, Blinken said.
"I think it is also useful for the two presidents to be able to speak directly, face to face," the US Secretary of State said.
According to him, diplomacy consists precisely in direct communication, and it surprises him when some talk about diplomacy as a weakness. Blinken noted that diplomatic negotiations "do not exclude the word' no ' from your vocabulary."
Blinken announced Biden's desire to discuss with Putin the stabilization of relations between Moscow and Washington the day before. He added that the United States does not seek to aggravate relations with Russia, but will respond to those steps that it considers unfriendly.
On April 13, Biden, in a telephone conversation, called on Putin to hold a bilateral summit on the territory of a neutral country. Then White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that the presidents could meet face-to-face next summer. On April 21, she confirmed that the two governments continue to consider the idea of a meeting between the two leaders. On April 25, Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov announced that Moscow and Washington had reached a preliminary agreement on a meeting of the heads of state in July.
