Former Polish President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Lech Walesa has been charged with perjury in the case of his cooperation with special services during the Polish People's Republic (PNR). RIA Novosti writes about this with reference to the Polish Institute of National Memory.
Suspicions about Walesa arose after the death of the former head of the Polish Interior Ministry, General Czeslaw Kiszczak. As a result of a search in the apartment of the former minister, law enforcement officers found a folder with documents allegedly signed by Valens. According to the uncovered data, Walesa, being the leader of the opposition Solidarity party, collaborated with the Polish Security Service (SB) under the pseudonym Bolek.
"Lech Walesa has been charged with perjury. The case concerns the statements of the ex-president about the falsification of his signatures under the documents of the Security Service," the Institute said in a statement. In 2016, Walesa reported that he did not cooperate with the Security Council of the People's Republic of Poland and did not sign the documents of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
According to the investigation, Bolek's signature coincided with Walesa's signature in 140 of 158 reports from the archive of the former Interior Minister of the People's Republic of Poland, as well as in 17 receipts for receiving money for giving testimony. According to Polish law, for giving false testimony to the investigation, a citizen can face from three to eight years in prison.
Walesa founded the Solidarity trade union in the 1980s. In 1983, he received the Nobel Peace Prize, and headed Poland in 1990-1995. Before the pandemic, Walesa gave paid lectures at various universities around the world. After the outbreak of the pandemic, he, according to his own statements, was forced to "look for additional work."
