The major powers at the G20 summit must overcome the lack of trust in each other, rooted in injustice, inequality and geopolitical differences. Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres called the restoration of trust the most important goal of the upcoming meeting, RIA Novosti reports.
The Secretary General stressed that first of all, countries need to overcome "vaccine nationalism" and support the global coronavirus vaccination strategy launched by WHO. It is planned to vaccinate 40 percent of the world's population by the end of 2021, and to immunize 70 percent by 2022.
Guterres also called on the G20 countries to extend the suspension of debt service for next year and make it available to all vulnerable heavily indebted and middle-income countries. "Advanced economies are investing almost 28 percent of their gross domestic product in economic recovery (after the COVID-19 pandemic - approx. <url>). For middle-income countries, this figure is up to 6.5 percent," he said.
The UN chief pointed out the need for more ambitious measures to combat climate change in order to reach "a reliable path to maintaining global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius." According to Guterres, the powers must take immediate action to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent by 2030.
In September, the UN Secretary General said that in 2021, due to disasters caused by climate change, more than 30 million people lost their homes. Guterres called on developed countries to fulfill their promises and allocate $100 billion to combat climate change.
