The call of Russian Ambassador Alexey Meshkov to the French Foreign Ministry can be considered as part of the demarche agreed by the EU countries. This is how the Russian embassy in Paris reacted to the incident, RIA Novosti reported on Tuesday, May 4.
According to the Russian diplomatic mission, Meshkov gave explanations to the French side regarding the restrictive measures taken by Moscow against a number of representatives of EU countries. At the same time, the ambassador clarified that Russia had to take such a step because of previous decisions of the European Union.
The fact that the Russian ambassador to France was summoned to the country's Foreign Ministry became known earlier on May 4. It was noted that this happened against the background of Moscow's introduction of sanctions against some European citizens.
On April 30, Russia banned eight EU citizens and representatives of European structures from entering its territory. The black list includes the President of the European Parliament David Maria Sassoli, the Deputy Chairman of the European Commission on Values and Transparency Vera Yurova, the head of the Berlin Prosecutor's Office Joerg Raupach, a member of the French delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Jacques Maire. Osa Scott, the head of the Chemical, Biological, Radiation and Nuclear Safety laboratory at the Swedish Total Defense Research Institute, was also sanctioned. In addition, citizens of the Baltic countries were subject to restrictions.
Before that, on March 2, the EU imposed restrictions on high-ranking Russian officials due to the situation with Alexei Navalny (the founder of the Anti-Corruption Fund, included by the Ministry of Justice in the register of organizations performing the functions of a foreign agent).
