Ukrainian citizens Lev Parnas and Andrey Kukushkin were found guilty of illegal financing of the US elections. This is stated in the message of U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, published on the website of the United States Department of Justice.
A federal jury in New York unanimously concluded that the defendants illegally sent money to the 2018 midterm elections in order to "gain influence on American politicians and candidates with an eye to making huge profits in the business related to the legalization of marijuana." According to TASS, Parnas was found guilty of five counts of acquiring political influence for money he allegedly received from an unnamed Russian source. He was also found guilty of making false statements about the sources of funds for the financing of the election campaign. In total, he faces up to 55 years in prison. Kukushkin was found guilty of two counts of assisting Parnassus, in total he faces up to ten years in prison.
On October 2, 2019, Deutsche Welle included entrepreneurs from Florida Igor Fruman and Lev Parnas in the list of Ukrainian "friends" of the then-current US President Donald Trump. It was clarified that the American leader announced them in a scandalous telephone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky. They allegedly helped Giuliani to contact the former Prosecutor General of Ukraine Viktor Shokin.
