Russian Ambassador to France Alexey Meshkov was summoned to the Foreign Ministry of the country against the background of Moscow's introduction of sanctions against a number of representatives of the European Union. This was announced on Tuesday, May 4, RIA Novosti reports, citing a representative of the French Foreign Ministry.
As explained in the French Foreign Ministry, the Russian ambassador voiced the position of Paris regarding the restrictions imposed by Russia. "We strongly condemn the measures announced on Friday, April 30, by the Russian authorities against a number of European officials," the official said.
At the same time, he noted that such actions by Russia are unlikely to contribute to reducing tensions between Moscow and European countries, and expressed hope that the Russian authorities will still "behave responsibly" to improve the situation.
In addition, the French side expressed concern to Meshkov about the recently adopted decree in Russia that limited the possibility of hiring employees for diplomatic missions in the field.
On April 30, Russia banned eight EU citizens and representatives of European structures from entering its territory. The black list includes the President of the European Parliament David Maria Sassoli, the Deputy Chairman of the European Commission on Values and Transparency Vera Yurova, the head of the Berlin Prosecutor's Office Joerg Raupach, a member of the French delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Jacques Maire. Osa Scott, the head of the Chemical, Biological, Radiation and Nuclear Safety laboratory at the Swedish Total Defense Research Institute, was also sanctioned. In addition, citizens of the Baltic countries were subject to restrictions.
On March 2, the EU imposed restrictions on high-ranking Russian officials due to the situation with Alexei Navalny (the founder of the Anti-Corruption Fund, included by the Ministry of Justice in the register of organizations performing the functions of a foreign agent).
